INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

Individual Therapy is a joint process between a client and their therapist. Common goals of individual therapy can be to inspire change and improve overall quality of life.  It is an effective treatment for a variety of emotional difficulties and mental health diagnoses. Unfortunately, individual therapy does not necessarily make problems disappear, rather, it equips an individual with tools needed to cope more appropriately.

This type of therapy may be used in conjunction with other types of mental and behavioral health treatments, such as family therapy or substance abuse counseling. Individuals greatly benefit from individual therapy because it provides a greater understanding of self, strategies to effectively identify and manage debilitating emotions, and opportunities to modify adverse behaviors, and facilitate healthy lifestyle changes.

COUPLES THERAPY

Couples Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that can help couples improve their relationship. This form of therapy addresses a plethora of relationship issues including relational roles, finances, communication, beliefs and values, families of origin, and parenting roles. Couples greatly benefit by developing necessary skills that lead to a better understanding of each other, conflict resolution, and elimination of dysfunctional behavior resulting in improved relationship satisfaction.

ANGER MANAGEMENT

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) suggest that anger and substance use disorders often co-occur, which increases an individual’s risk of negative consequences such as legal issues, physical violence, self-harm, troubled relationships, or job loss. Allison & Associates offers a 12-week anger management group using the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach, which has been proven to be an effective, time-limited treatment modality for anger issues. Our clinical staff utilize SAMHSA’s Anger Management for Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Clients: A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Manual and its companion participant workbook, which is a combined CBT approach that employs relaxation, cognitive, and communication skills interventions.

PARENTING CLASSES

Allison & Associates offer The Nurturing Parenting Programs (NPP), which are a family-centered trauma-informed initiative designed to help parents build nurturing parenting skills as an alternative to abusive and neglecting parenting and child-rearing practices. Long-term goals of the NPP are to avoid recidivism in families receiving social services, decrease multi-parent teen pregnancies, lower rates of juvenile delinquency and alcohol abuse, and eliminate intergenerational cycle of child abuse by teaching positive parenting skills.

We offer a group-based program where we teach parents to replace old, unwanted parenting patterns for more nurturing and caring ones. Group sessions include activities, discussions, role play, expressive art, and pre- and post-group assessments.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Our clinical team utilizes a psychoeducational approach to substance abuse treatment. We employ our education, training, and professional experience in the field of substance abuse to help individuals recovering from addiction live healthy, productive lives absent of substances.

We offer the Living in Balance stand-alone, research-based approach to substance abuse treatment. This curriculum is a flexible, practical, and user-friendly substance abuse treatment curriculum that incorporates Twelve Step/spiritual learning with cognitive-behavioral learning. The framework behind this curriculum is that addiction is a chronic, progressive condition involving compulsion, loss of control, repeated use regardless of adverse consequences, and ultimate, relapse. Addiction has a profound effect on every aspect of an individual’s life. Living in Balance stresses that addiction is a biopsychosocial problem and treatment must address how addiction has adversely impacted all of these areas. Living in Balance is a 12-session, 3-hour weekly comprehensive curriculum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Counseling provides an opportunity to understand and resolve the underlying issues that cause problematic behaviors. It will allow you to discuss your problems with a non-judgmental, objective listener who can assist in viewing your struggles differently and developing creative solutions. Although a counselor will not be able to solve your problems, they will be there to help and guide you through the process. During the first couple of sessions, your therapist will obtain information about the various areas of your life in order to determine the best course of treatment. Your counselor will be knowledgeable about a wide variety of issues and able to provide services to meet your needs.
